Protruding ear surgery, with or without implants

Prominent ears, commonly known as “protruding ears”, are the subject of complexes in many people, who decide to correct the shape or position of their ears through surgery.

In ear surgery, the Plastic Surgery specialist will make a small, perfectly invisible incision in the area behind the ears, from which he will remodel the cartilage forming the appropriate folds, reducing the depth of the concha and resecting the excess skin.

The duration of the ear operation is usually 45 minutes to an hour and depending on the age of the patient can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

Age to operate protruding ears

Normally ear surgery is performed from the age of 6 years old, since at this age the ears are already perfectly developed and have the size they will have in adulthood.

Care after ear surgery

After the ear surgery, the plastic surgeon will place a bandage that shapes the ear and allows it to heal in its new correct position. Once this bandage is removed, the patient is advised to wear a tennis strap at night for one to two weeks to prevent the ear from folding forward when sleeping.

Results of the ear surgery

The result after the ear surgery is permanent, it will not change with the necessary course. Complications of this operation are very rare and surgical touch-up is rarely required.

Ear operation with implant

The ear implant is a simple and effective surgical procedure that results in a personalized treatment for protruding ears. It differs from conventional surgery in that an initial evaluation can be performed at the first visit with the placement of a simulator on the outside of the ears. Thus, the shape of the ears will be modified according to the patient’s preferences. Another difference is that this operation is usually performed on adults or children over 7 years of age.

Two weeks before the operation of ears with implants the patient may not consume acetylsalicylic acid or anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as two days before the intervention may not consume alcohol.

The ear implant operation will also be quicker to perform and will be performed under local anesthesia. The procedure consists of placing an ear fold implant under the skin and closing it with a few absorbable stitches.

After the implantation of the ear folds in the ears, it is normal to experience some pain or discomfort, but it will subside quickly, as well as the swelling that will disappear within a week. The patient may be prescribed antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection in the surgical wound, and unlike conventional ear surgery, it will not be necessary to wear a bandage after treatment.
