Delaying childbearing, a possible choice

One of the most interesting fields of work is the vitrification of oocytes. Vitrification consists of maintaining the cellular structures at very low temperatures until the moment they are to be used. In this sense, and as an advantage in the field of assisted reproduction, it allows the woman’s reproductive capacity to be postponed for as long as she wishes, maintaining the possibilities of fertility. In this way, women do not lose the ability to conceive in the future, as would occur naturally.

To which women is this process recommended?

  1. Women who wish to postpone childbearing
  2. Women who have undergone oncological or gonadotoxic treatment.
  3. Women with various surgeries on the ovaries, as in cases of women with Endometriosis.
  4. Patients in whom it is preferable to perform embryo transfer in a cycle other than follicular stimulation.
  5. Patients with low response, in order to accumulate oocytes or to have a sufficient number of oocytes.

In itself, the future of female-caused reproduction should not be assumed as a spectacular improvement in terms of reproductive techniques, but rather as a change in the approach and in the way in which experts in Assisted Reproduction face fertility problems. The objective is to avoid reaching the point where a woman with a clinical history of infertility comes for consultation due to oocyte quality.

Thus, experts believe that the way forward is to ensure that all women who wish to do so can vitrify their oocytes in order to use them if they need them in the future. To this end, they believe that they must carry out outreach work to help young women become aware of the possibilities that currently exist to preserve their “oocyte capital”.
