The 12 commandments of an aesthetic medicine practice

What do we need to keep in mind when visiting Aesthetic Medicine centers?

  • Safety.
  • Enjoyment.
  • Happiness.
  • Magic.

This is an important act of introspection and how it helps me to undertake my work a little bit better every day….

On a daily basis I try to put myself in the place of each of my patients… If I were a person who would like to improve their appearance or who has a complex about an area of their face, their hair, their body, etc… If I were a person who wants to prevent and age as well as possible, but I am afraid of going too far or not looking good, not being noticed, or even worse, looking worse than before!….

In my day to day I see patients who have all kinds of doubts and insecurities and patients who have had bad experiences and feel fear … It is normal to have an expectation or fear when you go to an aesthetic doctor asking him to help you improve, because after all they are your face, your eyes, which are your cover letter, your body, and we will have one or a thousand complexes deep down we want them (believe it or not), and to tell the truth, the most important thing is how we feel about ourselves.

But what I’m going to … a real case: I, Mery Lamah, I am 38 years old, I am a mother of a large family, I work long hours, I take care of my diet, but I barely have time to do much exercise. If I’m lucky, 2 times a week spinning and thank goodness! The truth is that I am starting to notice dark circles under my eyes, and my eyes look tired, so I decide to come to my office.

I want to have an aesthetic medical treatment to improve and prevent, slowing down these signs of tiredness and giving more harmony to my appearance, since I know that it will happen if I don’t do it soon and, personally, I like to take care of my appearance, although without being a slave to it. Besides, we all know that it influences our self-esteem and vital energy directly or indirectly… Is it banal? Maybe for some people yes, since everyone gives importance to things to a lesser or greater extent; it is something totally individual, so it can be catalogued as banal, but in our current reality it is like that?

It’s like when you wear clothes you don’t feel comfortable in or you look bad in, it’s as if you had a stone in your shoe, or that wart on your neck that you’ve been trying to remove for a year and you finally decide to go to the doctor and in 2 minutes it’s gone! What a change of feeling, isn’t it? From discomfort to comfort in two minutes! It’s magic!!!!! The opposite extreme is when you put on a piece of clothing that fits you like silk, made for you. You make up, you comb your hair and you put on that high heel, you feel that rush of eating the world and a lot of security … That is part of the behavior of human beings for centuries, if not, look at the Egyptian or Greek culture and the canons in art and beauty by which they were governed … I myself identify with this behavior, but I accept that it is a reality and something natural in today’s society and the XXI century and that is part of our day to day. The important thing is that it does not become a real problem of self-esteem, depression or anxiety, nor interfere significantly in us and our environment. Believe me I have seen many cases and many times you end up being more of a psychologist than an aesthetic doctor (I express my admiration to psychologists for their ability to listen and help solve problems). Aesthetic Medicine and Psychology are directly related, it is an irrefutable truth!

All this that I am telling you, which may make you dizzy to read, is to help you, wherever you are; when you decide to go to an Aesthetic Medicine consultation, be very clear and think about professional and high level Aesthetic Medicine?

The first thing to ask ourselves… Are we really clear about what we want? What are you looking for when you go to a professional of Aesthetic Medicine? What is your expectation? Is it real?

If we get going and stop and think about people who want to have an aesthetic medical treatment… what do they really want?

  1. Patients want safety first and foremost.
  2. Patients seek peace of mind.
  3. Patients seek satisfaction.
  4. Patients want to be listened to, to really have doctor-patient communication, fluid with feedback.
  5. They want to be treated with respect, to be looked in the eye and to be understood.
  6. They want the professional who is going to treat them to be honest and their treatment to be personalized. They don’t want fashion, not all faces are the same and not all people are the same. We are unique and different, so we will fit what we really need.
  7. They want a physical place that looks good, pleasant, clean, aseptic, with the necessary safety measures and health permits of a medical center or medical aesthetic practice.
  8. They want the best hands using the best high-end products on the market, that have science behind them and that provide a guarantee of safety, because at the end of the day, it is something you are inoculating into your body.
  9. Patients want natural results.
  10. They want to be attended to and offered a solution to an undesired effect. For this, the practitioner must be prepared to resolve it.
  11. Patients want a pleasant experience of satisfaction. They want to enjoy and experience happiness.
  12. Patients want magic and we can do it and do it well…And, of course, all of this is possible.

When you do your homework and put yourself in your patient’s shoes, you will have values as an integral human being and professional; then, you get there and you can do things well and better. Personally, I know that I still have a lot to learn, and a day in life that you don’t learn something can be a lost day, but if there is one thing that is clear to me, it is the important things in my life: my family, my profession and my patients. I can say that I am fortunate to be able to practice and work in what I like. I have traveled many roads and there are many to travel, in the end it is to do good and not to look at whom.
