Low emotional development: difficulty in managing emotions

Low emotional development (EDD) or emotional illiteracy is the inability to understand and manage one’s own emotions.

The person with EDB feels overwhelmed, overwhelmed and out of control in any unexpected situation. In addition, they do not empathize, are unable to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and do not understand realities different from their own. Their social skills are usually very rigid and although they can sometimes perform well, they lack assertiveness, sensitivity and a genuine closeness with which to create meaningful emotional bonds and not only motivated by personal interest.

How do we identify BDE?

The costs of EDB can be varied: polarized thinking, repression, impulsivity, narcissism, rigidity, obsessive need to be right, expecting too much from others, low frustration tolerance, poor tolerance of other people’s reactions, taking any small failure as something personal…

The person with EDB is not endowed with the psychological resources and emotional mechanisms with which to better manage emotions such as sadness, fear, anger or disappointment.

How can we manage emotions?

Specialists in Psychology observe that these people are prone to be suffering from depression and/or anxiety, as well as manifesting difficulties in managing these internal states and being able to overcome them. For this reason, it is important to educate in Emotional Intelligence. We must train ourselves in these skills to be more apt in the management of our emotions.

We often reach adulthood with many insecurities. We are aware that we lack the tools to master our emotions, as well as certain skills to better face adversity in order to live better. If we do not start first of all with ourselves, accepting with self-consciousness our low emotional development, we will hardly have the talent to motivate our children and to train them in empathy, assertiveness or other social skills.
