Psychology: bridge between Therapy and Personal Development

Integrity is the basis for achieving a psychologically healthy life. There is nothing worse than not being carefully true to oneself.

In Spain people are not used to see the Psychologist as someone who can help you in your self-development, to broaden your quality of life, to enrich and enhance your capabilities. On the contrary, the help of the psychologist is sought for problems that one suffers.

But what is truly fundamental is the human and psychological development that a person can achieve, regardless of whether the origin of your search is due to a problem you have or because you want to evolve personally.

As the famous psychiatrist Carl G. Jung considered, neurosis can actually be more of an engine for the evolution of the personality. This approach is more common in other countries where psychological work is more developed and has advanced more, such as the Anglo-Saxon countries, for example.

In general, people who come to the clinic do so because they are seeking to solve a problem that distresses them, frightens them, depresses them or generates conflict with their environment. We work with people who are suffering from psychological issues or who want to advance in their life development. Obviously, anyone can live this type of situation or seek their own personal development, no matter where they start from.

Why do we suffer?

In terms of reasons for consultation, people come for very diverse reasons: anxiety problems, depression, problems in the work environment, difficult situations with the family or partner, needs related to professional development or clarification of their professional situation, life crises, after-effects of childhood trauma, etc.

Psychological difficulties are always immersed in and affected by lifestyles and cultures. Each lifestyle and each culture, be it Western or other, favors the appearance of certain problems or specific psychological tendencies, both good and not so desirable. There is no culture that does not generate imbalances and, therefore, aspects that can cause suffering, but what generates a culture does not generate another and vice versa.

In the practice we meet people who are very sensitive and, in many cases, vulnerable or victims of very toxic contexts, past or present.

How to have good emotional health

For me, integrity is the basis for achieving a psychologically healthy life, and by that I mean harmony between what one says, what one feels and what one does. Contradiction between these aspects causes anxiety and suffering. There is nothing worse, so to speak, than not being carefully true to oneself.

Moreover, this inconsistency is a source of misunderstandings and conflicts with those around one, and leads progressively to great confusion in knowing what one really wants in life and who one really is.

Someone said that “courage is what it takes to live the way you want to live”. And also, I add, patience and persistence. In my experience, people who are motivated to change and persist with the right psychological guidance achieve inner peace and often achieve amazing things for their lives. Much more than they dare to hope for in the first place.

Life generally gives us many more options than we are sometimes able to see.
