Solve your doubts to find the best type of breast prosthesis

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure in which breast prostheses are implanted through a minimal incision. It is performed in order to improve the shape of the breasts and increase their volume, achieving excellent results today thanks to modern anatomical prostheses.

Are there different types of breast prostheses?

Broadly speaking we can divide the prostheses in Round or Anatomical. The Round ones are limited to increase the volume in a rather unnatural way, while the Anatomical ones, besides increasing the volume, allow to modify the shape of the breasts according to the patient’s wishes, with much more predictable and natural results.

Both types of prostheses are placed under the pectoral muscle or under the muscle fascia when necessary. The implantation of the breast will not influence breastfeeding nor will it modify the periodic check-ups performed by the gynecologist. Mammograms will not be a problem either, as other types of tests: ultrasound or other diagnostic tests.

Possible risks of augmentation with breast prostheses

Currently the risk of rejection (capsular contracture) ranges between 1% and 2% of patients perfectly operated. This complication is much more frequent in patients operated with defective surgical techniques, in inappropriate operating rooms or with low quality breast prostheses.

Benefits of breast augmentation with prostheses

Breast augmentation with prostheses is currently the only technique that allows to achieve sufficient volumes and excellent and predictable results. The possible alternative treatment (infiltration of the breasts with the patient’s own fat) does not allow, at present, more than retouching the breasts achieving discrete increases in very specific areas. It is an excellent technique to complement the results obtained with prosthesis but absolutely insufficient if used alone.
