Holmium Laser Enucleation for Prostate Hyperplasia

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia is a minimally invasive technique designed to eliminate the ailments attributable to this pathology. Some of these may be: weakness in the urinary stream or increased urination, both during the day and at night.

How is Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) performed?

It is a technique that is performed through the urethra, without the need to make any incision in the abdomen. By using the “Holmium Laser” it is possible to completely eliminate the obstructive prostatic adenoma, making it unlikely that the disease will reproduce over the years. This virtue makes the HOLEP technique the one recommended by the European Association of Urology.

What preparation should the patient follow before prostatic enucleation?

The procedure, being minimally invasive, does not require general anesthesia, and only requires fasting for the hours prior to surgery and the cessation of antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.

What are the results of the treatment and what care should the patient follow?

Normally the patient is discharged 24 hours after the procedure, without catheter.

The results depend on the experience of the surgeon and urologist, being necessary a cumulative experience of more than 50-100 procedures to achieve the desired results in terms of urinary continence or voiding power.
