Venous insufficiency must be treated in time

The valves in the veins, if not functioning properly, can eventually lead to pooling of blood which in turn will promote the appearance of varicose veins. “This is a problem with the venous return of blood through the veins, which are responsible for carrying blood back to the heart from the tissues,” explains cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Juan Fernando Biguria.

What is venous insufficiency?

The heart is the main organ of the circulatory system that pumps blood to different parts of the body through the arteries. This flow has to go to and return to the heart through the veins. The problem occurs when these blood vessels do not work properly and the blood starts to accumulate increasing the pressure considerably inside the veins.

It is necessary to explain that the veins are formed by valves that make the blood follow only one path and cannot go backwards. Without this non-return valve, because of our body position, the blood would not be able to go up the legs towards the heart. It is therefore important that they are in good working order.

What are the consequences?

The first consequence is an unsightly result especially in the legs with the appearance of varicose veins.
“At the beginning, their effect can only be of an aesthetic nature, but as time goes by, if we do not try to prevent or solve them, they become a medical problem that can lead to more serious consequences,” says the surgeon. Therefore, it is necessary to treat it in order to avoid greater consequences.

Are varicose veins more prone to occur in women?

Varicose veins are more frequent in women than in men and it is believed to be due to hormonal factors. Their presence may also depend on other factors such as age, heredity or the constitution of each person. And, just as importantly, it can be influenced by one’s daily routine.

How can varicose veins be prevented or improved?

There are different measures to prevent varicose veins. It is essential to have a balanced and healthy diet to avoid overweight, combining it with a little sport: walking or walking a while a day is always good.

It is also recommended to take cold water showers on the legs and put them a little elevated while we are lying down to help improve blood circulation in the legs.
