Regenerative Gynecology

Regenerative gynecology includes all those medical and surgical treatments that restore the appearance, anatomy and function of the vagina, vulva and pelvic floor. This includes new technologies such as laser, radiofrequency or photodynamic, as well as biostimulation of tissues with microinjections of local anesthesia.

Most of these treatments are minimally invasive and do not require anesthesia or are performed under local anesthesia.

Most regenerative gynecology treatments are minimally invasive.

Why is it performed?

Regenerative gynecology is performed when the tissues of the female reproductive system have lost muscle strength, lubrication, volume, elasticity and flaccidity, as well as changes in pigmentation, which causes a loss of functionality and comfort in the patient’s daily life. Normally these changes in the female reproductive system are caused by trauma or episiotomies during childbirth, deficits or changes in hormones or simply the passage of time.

It is recommended to resort to Regenerative Gynecology treatments if the patient suffers from:

  • Vaginal laxity syndrome or vaginal relaxation.
  • Menopause, which causes vaginal dryness and atrophy, as well as difficulties and pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Mild urinary incontinence and urgency in urination.
  • Changes in the appearance of the external genitalia
  • Vulvoperineal pain

What does it consist of?

Regenerative gynecology treatments include various techniques, so each case must be studied individually.

Both laser and radiofrequency treatments emit heat, causing regenerative changes that remodel the tissues to treat vaginal laxity, dryness and mild urinary incontinence.

Usually several treatments are combined. An example is the case of women with menopause, who suffer from vaginal dryness and pain during sexual intercourse. In such a case several laser or radiofrequency sessions will be applied, in addition to a hyaluronic acid treatment at the entrance of the vagina. A treatment with bioidentical hormones can also be added.

Another case would be to apply a vaginal laser treatment six weeks after childbirth to strengthen weakened tissues.

Preparation for Regenerative Gynecology

Most regenerative gynecology treatments are minimally invasive and are performed in the office without anesthesia or with local anesthesia. Therefore, it is not necessary for the patient to be specially prepared for it. However, it will be necessary to rule out infections or any other gynecological pathology that the patient may suffer, before being operated.

Care after the operation

Recovery after regenerative gynecology treatments is practically immediate, without hindering the patient’s work or daily activities. The results are very favorable in most cases and can be appreciated from the first treatment. However, some of them may require maintenance treatments, such as laser, radiofrequency and biostimulation, as they are not permanent.
