What are zirconium caps?

Zirconium crowns are dental caps made entirely of zirconium, a biocompatible material that is free of dark metals such as those found in conventional porcelain crowns. This allows them to achieve a more esthetic and natural result. In addition, zirconium is a material of high hardness and durability, so these caps can be thinner while retaining high strength.

It is a technique that is highly requested by patients to solve problems of esthetics and oral health, allowing minimal wear on the tooth and a stable color over time.

Zirconium veneers offer minimal wear on the tooth and a stable color over time.

Why is it done?

Zirconium caps are placed because a patient has suffered wear on a tooth, so the cap reinforces it and prevents further deterioration. They are also used when a tooth has been lost and it is necessary to reintegrate the tooth before there is an imbalance in the bite and, in an advanced case, malocclusion.

On the other hand, zirconium caps are made when the patient wants to solve aesthetic problems such as the color, position or shape of their teeth. In other words, he/she goes to a specialist in dentistry to retouch his/her smile at an esthetic level.

What does it consist of?

The procedure to place a dental cap is divided into several steps:

– Cutting the tooth: it is necessary to reduce the size of the tooth to accurately fit the zirconium cap.

– Dental impression: take the measurements to create an exact mold and decide the color of the veneer to match the rest of the teeth.

– Fabrication of the zirconia veneer in laboratories.

– Final placement of the veneer.

Preparation for the zirconia veneers

An examination should be carried out to detect if there are any oral health problems. In this case, they should be treated before the zirconium sleeves are placed.

Post-procedure care

It is important to maintain the zirconium caps in the same way as the rest of the teeth. Daily oral hygiene should be maintained after every meal and it is advisable to use dental floss and mouthwash to complement.

It should be noted that zirconium caps are highly resistant to breakage and will retain their initial color without darkening. However, it is necessary to visit the dentist’s office for check-ups.
