Rezum (water vapor therapy)

What is the rezum technique?

It is an innovative technique used for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It uses an instrument similar to a water vapor gun that causes tissue necrosis. The body itself is in charge of eliminating the dead tissue.

In what cases is it used?

It is applied in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition increasingly common in men over 50 years old.

Symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia

  • Decreased force of urination when urinating.
  • Discomfort when urinating.
  • Urinary incontinence.

Indications

  • Patients with mild urinary symptoms.
  • Men with prostate greater than 30 cc and less than 80 cc.
  • Patients who have difficulty tolerating prostate medication.

How is the treatment applied?

A needle is injected through the urethra which applies thermal energy in the form of water vapor until 103ºC is reached. When the steam comes into contact with the prostate tissue, the energy released causes cell death.

Benefits

  • The procedure does not require anesthesia.
  • It is quick and does not exceed 30 minutes. The patient can return home the same day.
  • It does not affect ejaculation or erection.
  • No medications are necessary.

Are there any side effects?

Several studies have been carried out with a follow-up of several years and it has been concluded that in some cases side effects of little intensity can be observed and disappear within a few days.
