World Fertility Day: how we can take care of it

World Fertility Day, which is celebrated on June 4, aims to raise awareness of the importance of the increasing problems associated with infertility that are occurring more and more frequently in our society.

What is infertility?

Infertility is “a disease of the reproductive system defined as the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of unprotected sexual intercourse”, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a pathology that, in Spain, affects approximately one million couples of reproductive age.

Currently, there are many people who have difficulties in achieving pregnancy. The most limiting factor in achieving pregnancy is the woman’s age, since after 35 years of age the loss of eggs accelerates and their quality decreases. However, infertility has other causes.

Causes of infertility

The main causes of infertility, which affects both men and women, are the following:

  • Obesity and overweight
  • Environmental pollution
  • Lifestyle
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Tobacco use
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovaries
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Diabetes
  • Poor egg quality and lack of ovulation
  • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Hormonal problems
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Incorrect sperm development
  • Stress

How to improve fertility

There are different tips that people can apply to their lifestyle to improve fertility and promote pregnancy.

On the one hand, it is important to control weight by following a healthy diet and practicing sports. As we have seen, obesity is one of the limiting factors in achieving pregnancy, since it reduces the quality of the spermatozoa and can lead to complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

For this reason, it is important to control weight through a diet based on antioxidants and vitamins, which can be obtained with vegetables, fruits, fish, etc. To prevent obesity, it is also important to practice physical exercise, which also helps to reduce stress.

On the other hand, alcohol and tobacco consumption should be avoided, as they have a negative influence on the ability of men and women to have a fertile life.

Finally, it is important to reduce stress and anxiety. This can be achieved by meditation techniques or by engaging in quiet activities.

When should we go for consultation for fertility problems?

There are a series of situations that can be considered a reason for consultation. In this video, Dr. Francisco Ros Berruezo, specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, explains the different reasons that may make a visit to the specialist for fertility problems necessary. He also explains the doubts that may arise in the woman and the couple when deciding to go for a consultation.

Couples who do not go to the specialist and let years go by without medical evaluation are those who usually have more problems in achieving pregnancy. For this reason, it is essential to follow the recommendations and go to the specialist’s office to initiate a study and the appropriate reproductive treatments to achieve a successful pregnancy in a simple way.
