Breaking myths on World Parkinson’s Day

World Parkinson’s Day, a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that leads to progressive disability due to the loss of dopaminergic cells, was celebrated today, April 11. Parkinson’s currently affects 150,000 people in Spain and is a disease that has become well known, becoming part of the common vocabulary, although – as is often the case with many diseases – certain myths have been created around Parkinson’s disease.

That is why, of all the initiatives prepared for World Parkinson’s Day, I found the campaign “Break the myths of Parkinson’s! of the Spanish Parkinson’s Federation to be particularly timely. From its website and through a campaign that has featured various events and celebrities, this federation has tried to eradicate myths such as that Parkinson’s disease only affects older people, when in fact 1 in 5 sufferers is under 50 years old. That it is fatal, is another of the myths that exist, because although it has no treatment, people with Parkinson’s currently have almost the same life expectancy as the average. And, another of the great myths is that Parkinson’s only causes tremor, when unfortunately it has other harsh consequences. A world eminence in Parkinson’s disease

On this World Parkinson’s Day we cannot fail to remember that Dr. Eduardo Tolosa is a world eminence in Parkinson’s disease. This doctor, a member of Top Doctors, is a reference for doctors in his specialty and an internationally renowned researcher, which has made him a regular at conferences and congresses, as well as the author of articles on Parkinson’s disease in various scientific journals. An expert within everyone’s reach.
