More than 4,000 people are affected by Huntington’s disease in Spain

Last Saturday 24th was held in Santiago de Compostela the presentation of the Galician Association of Huntington’s Disease. The specialist in Assisted Reproduction and member of Top Doctors, Dr. Graña Barcia, collaborated explaining the latest techniques in her specialty.

The Galician Association of Korean Huntington’s was created with the aim of providing support to patients and families throughout Galicia who live with this disease. The prestigious specialist Dr. Graña Barcia exposed the latest techniques in Assisted Reproduction to be able to have offspring free of Huntington’s disease. One of them is the Preimplantational Diagnosis, a technique to detect those sick embryos and transfer those that are healthy.

Huntington’s disease is the third most important neurodegenerative pathology after Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. It is currently estimated that more than 4,000 people suffer from it in Spain and more than 15,000 are at risk of developing it as a consequence of its hereditary and incurable nature. Although it is still a largely unknown disease, its symptoms severely incapacitate the affected person and have a progressive evolution. Moreover, they are often similar to Parkinson’s, ALS and Alzheimer’s, with the difference that the onset of the first signs occurs around the age of 35 or 45 years and its vital prognosis is about 15 to 20 years.
