World Day Against Pain

World Day Against Pain is celebrated every October 17 with the aim of raising awareness of the urgency of finding relief from pain caused by certain diseases.

In 2004, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) launched the Global Year Against Pain initiative. Pain relief is declared a fundamental human right. Awareness of this need to support research to find relief has increased over the years. This year, IASP’s campaign focuses on joint pain.

According to IASP, pain is an “unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”

The professionals of the Aliaga Institute, a center specializing in Pain Unit and member of Top Doctors, affirm that there are patients who have not yet found a cure for their ailment. According to the Spanish Pain Society, chronic patients take a year to be referred to pain units and some even wait nine years to receive optimal treatment for their disease.

The Aliaga Institute, founded in 2008 by Dr. Luis Aliaga Font, offers a wide range of services, always focusing on the cure within the framework of multidisciplinary treatment.

Pain affects people’s lives, impairing their physical appearance and creating greater dependence, insecurity and isolation. In addition, it is also a reason for sick leave. In fact, in Spain, the rate of absenteeism from work due to pain is very high.

The multidisciplinary treatment offered by the Aliaga Institute allows for a comprehensive approach.

  • Complementary therapies, performed by clinical psychologist Mrs. Carolina Franceschi, help patients to cope with pain in the best possible way, incorporating Biofeedback techniques during therapy.
  • Acupuncture. A scientifically proven treatment that relieves headaches, headaches and migraines, among others, is performed by a renowned specialist, Dr. Marián Lorente.
  • Osteopathy is also part of this multidisciplinary treatment, by the osteopath Anna Toribio.
  • All these therapies mentioned above are often complementary to interventional techniques. In this field, under the medical direction of Dr. Victor Mayoral, work: Dr. Antonio Ojeda Niño, Dr. Carlos L. Nebreda Clavo, Dr. Ancor Serrano Afonso, Dr. Patricia Magalló Zapater and Dr. Cristina Vieta Pascual.
