Cordoba’s medical research is awarded at international level

The medical team of Ressalta, a Cordovan company with which Dr. Pineda Sicilia, traumatologist and member of Top Doctors, collaborates, won ten awards at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), held in Chicago last December, in recognition of its advances in diagnostic imaging applied to the musculoskeletal system.

One of the most outstanding award-winning projects deals with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in meniscal transplantation and implantation, a therapeutic solution that requires perfect coordination between the radiologist and the orthopedic surgeon to obtain good results. This surgical technique aims to preserve as much meniscus as possible by performing a resection and replacing the original meniscus by means of a meniscal implant or transplant in order to delay the onset of osteoarthritis as much as possible.

Meniscal pathology is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in Traumatology, but meniscal implant or transplant in properly selected patients can have very good results. Normally, the ideal patient profile for this technique is under 55 years of age and does not have advanced osteoarthritis, since meniscal transplantation prevents a future knee prosthesis.

Thanks to MRI, the orthopedic surgeon can obtain the exact measurement of the meniscus to be replaced so that the bone bank sends the right one to be implanted in the patient’s knee. This diagnostic test is essential, since it is the only technique for measuring the meniscus to be treated and a transplant cannot be programmed without first knowing its size.

Currently, this technique is performed in few centers in Spain, both in the public and private spheres, as it is relatively new and requires maximum coordination between the different members of the medical team.
