The rise of the black market in cosmetic surgery

Dr. Natalia Ribé, member of Top Doctors and the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME), has recently exposed the growing black market in aesthetic surgery. The concern for the price of the product instead of its quality and safety, among patients and professionals, has increased this problem.

Causes of the increase of the black market

The democratization of aesthetic medicine and the increase of innovative products in the sector have also been other conditioning factors. The problem lies in the fact that these types of operations may be unregulated, unsafe or lacking in guarantees.

Dr. Natalia Ribé assures that the most counterfeited products are Botox or liquid silicone, since this is the area where most aesthetic treatments are performed.

In addition, the growing black market in aesthetic medicine has led to the emergence of people who practice the profession without being properly trained or prepared to carry out certain treatments.

Dr. Ribé’s objective, and that of many other specialists in the sector, is to raise awareness of the importance of investing in safe aesthetic treatments performed by professionals. Surgical professionals such as Dr. Ribé assure that these substances that are to be injected into the body require prior research and experimentation, and their safety must have been demonstrated. Along these lines, the doctor adds that “it is the medical-aesthetic community itself that destroys itself by offering treatments at low prices”.
