Artificial insemination success

Artificial insemination is one of the simplest techniques performed in an infertility clinic. It also offers fairly high pregnancy rates. Artificial insemination can be performed with the couple’s own sperm or with donor sperm.

What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination consists of depositing in the woman’s uterus at the moment of ovulation a semen sample with a concentration of the sperm with the best fertilizing capacity.

Artificial insemination aims to improve the chances of achieving pregnancy in two ways:

  • It ensures ovulation and even improves it. Using a stimulation of the ovaries, by increasing the number of eggs that can achieve pregnancy.
  • It leaves the sperm inside the uterus, making it easier for them to reach their target. This avoids the places where most sperm get stuck, such as the cervix and the uterus itself.

When is artificial insemination recommended?

  • When the number of sperm useful to achieve pregnancy is slightly or moderately lower than normal.
  • When there is only one obstructed fallopian tube.
  • When the only problem is an ovulation disturbance.
  • When there is no clear factor that justifies the difficulty in achieving pregnancy. This is known as sterility of unknown origin.

Phases of artificial insemination

  • First of all, the ovaries are stimulated. This is done through the application of drugs that ensure the development of at least one follicle (the place where the eggs develop during the ovarian cycle), but try to ensure that two or three are formed, since this improves the probability of success with a very slight increase in the risk of multiple pregnancy (7% compared to the 2% offered by nature).
  • During this process, ultrasounds are performed every two or three days to control the development of the follicle until it is ready to ovulate. Then another medication is applied to trigger ovulation. There is also artificial insemination with natural cycle, which consists of enhancing this phase without medication, controlling the follicle that usually forms spontaneously. This requires a correct function of the ovaries and the probabilities of success are greatly reduced.
  • Just when we know that ovulation is occurring, insemination is performed. For this purpose, the semen sample is processed in order to concentrate the sperm with the best fertilizing capacity.

The processed sample is introduced into a small plastic tube and placed inside the uterus to deposit the semen sample inside.

Artificial insemination is painless and does not cause any more discomfort than a regular gynecological check-up.

Effectiveness of conjugal artificial insemination

According to specialists in Gynecology, artificial insemination achieves pregnancy rates of 18-20%, while the probability of success for a couple without any problems is 25% with intercourse.
