Industrial Chemical Derivatives and Child Neurodevelopment

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals capable of altering the hormone system, in humans or animals. All people are exposed to chemicals that can disrupt the hormone system and cause numerous health problems with irreversible effects.

DEQs can increase the risk of childhood diseases by altering hormone-mediated processes that are critical for growth and development during gestation, infancy and childhood.

The fetus, infant, and child may have increased sensitivity to environmental stressors, such as DEQs, due to their rapid development and increased exposure to some DEQs as a result of specific developmental and neurodevelopmental behavior, anatomy, and physiology.

How do endocrine disruptors affect?

They can affect the body at various levels and thus cause different problems:

  • Female reproductive health: precocious puberty, breast cancer, etc.
  • Male reproductive health: malformations in baby genitalia, low semen quality, etc.
  • Metabolism disorders: obesity or diabetes.
  • Cardiovascular problems.
  • Neurological disorders and diseases: neurodevelopmental disturbances or neurogenerative diseases.

Pathologies and risks derived from industrial chemicals

Epidemiological studies examine the relationship between early exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, triclosan and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with childhood neurobehavioral disorders and obesity.

Available epidemiological evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to several of these ubiquitous EDCs is associated with negative behavior (BPA and phthalates) and excess adiposity or increased risk of obesity and/or overweight (PFAS), as well as infant neurodevelopment.

Ultimately, improved estimates of the causal effects of EDC exposure on child health could help identify susceptible subpopulations. This identification could lead to public health interventions to reduce exposure.
