What is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a professional who deals with gum-related diseases and works to give patients the opportunity to enjoy a healthier mouth. His goal is to take care of our gums and keep them in good condition.

If you feel tenderness in your gums or even bleeding, you should see a specialist to avoid running the risk of contracting various oral diseases, severe pain or extreme oral conditions.

In addition to the gums, the periodontist is also in charge of controlling our jaw. His tasks include being able to anticipate future gum and tooth problems, treat current ones and repair previous ones.

Specialist in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the gums

A periodontist’s job is to protect all the supporting structures of our teeth and is trained to make sure our gums, jawbone and gum connective tissue are in good condition. If left untreated, gum damage can cause us to lose a tooth or, in a worst-case scenario, suffer from gum or jaw disease that could require the removal of a portion of the jawline.

These professionals work to correct soft tissue problems in the mouth before they become a major problem. Prevention is a key part of this work, but surgery is also necessary, as in the case of periodontitis.

Identifying disease progression

Advanced stages of gum disease are worrisome. Sometimes they are early warning signs of cancer, especially in adult men.

The dentist will test for cancerous cells and in cases where the patient loses one or more teeth, the periodontist will also suggest a course of action to cover up the situation.
