7 exercises to regain mobility after breast augmentation

The physiotherapists at Clinica Granado Tiagonce, a plastic surgery clinic in Madrid, explain a series of exercises and stretches for patients who are in the postoperative phase of breast surgery.

These exercises are recommended for patients after an augmentation mammoplasty, 1 year having passed since this Plastic Surgery in Madrid Clinic.

Regarding postoperative physiotherapy, the shortening of the anterior (pectoral) musculature must be taken into account, since it is one of the consequences that may arise after the aesthetic operation. For this reason, the objective is to stretch this musculature and strengthen the area of the musculature that makes the opposite movement to the pectoral, that is, to work the area of the trapezius, rhomboids and external rotators.

The following is a list of strengthening exercises for postoperative treatment:

External shoulder rotation with rubber band and towel between body and elbow. This exercise is performed 3 times (sets) with 12 repetitions with the weaker rubber band for each arm. The rubber band should be changed once the patient is able to do the series without any fatigue or difficulty. The patient should rest for about 1 minute between sets.

Horizontal rowing with rubber band. The same number of series and repetitions is done, in addition to maintaining the same rest as in the previous exercise (3 series 12 repetitions).

Scapular retraction with rubber band. The guidelines are the same, this exercise is performed 3 times, around 10-12 repetitions each time, resting for about 1 minute.

Regarding stretching, the following stretches are performed:

Pectoral stretch with door frame. The elbow is placed on the door frame with the aim of stretching the pectoral muscle as the patient moves forward. 2-3 sets of about 30 seconds duration are performed.

Pectoral stretching with towel. Three series of 30 seconds each will be performed.

Stretching of the anterior arm chain (forearm flexors, biceps and pectoral). It should be performed with the hand resting on the wall, taking care not to throw the shoulder forward.

Stretched arm, elbow flexor looking forward, low shoulder and if you want to increase the difficulty, we can turn the head to the opposite side. We would execute this stretch for about 2 minutes.
