What is guided surgery in implant dentistry

We call guided implantology to the processes in which prior to the surgery we are able to plan everything by means of a specific software. For this, days before, we have had to perform a 3D CT scan and an intraoral scan of the arches (which in the past was done with pastes). These two files are integrated into a design software and with it we plan the placement of the implants according to where we want the teeth.

What are the advantages over the conventional implantology method?

It allows us to be more precise, “cleaner” and faster at the time of the intervention but, without any doubt, the most important advantage is to be able to place the implant exactly in the ideal position with respect to the future tooth.

How is it possible to “leave with teeth” on the same day?

This technique is known as immediate loading. In order to be able to carry it out, it is necessary to fulfill a series of requirements and to achieve a high initial stability of the implants. As we have designed the teeth prior to the intervention, once the implants have been placed we only have to place the provisional implants the same day or the following day.

In which cases can it be applied?

As I said, immediate loading can be carried out as long as we meet the requirements of high initial stability of the implants. This can be predicted before starting each case.

Are there any differences in the postoperative period, and what is it like in this case?

Of course, the postoperative period of the cases we perform with guided surgery is unparalleled. There is hardly any swelling and the patient reports slight discomfort for 2-3 days, during which he can go about his normal life.

When can I eat and bite normally?

If we have not placed the teeth, we recommend not to bite on the operated area for the first 10/15 days. In the case of having placed the provisional teeth the same day, I always explain that it is necessary to follow a soft diet so as not to overload the newly placed implants.
