Why do mouth sores appear?

Canker sores are small wounds (ulcers) that appear on the mucosa of the mouth, both on the inside of the cheek and lips as well as the tongue. They are characterized by a whitish central area delimited by a reddish halo, they do not usually exceed half a cm in diameter and are usually very annoying. They usually heal by themselves within a week.

Why do I get so many sores in my mouth?

When they appear constantly and/or are very numerous, it is important to carry out an adequate and exhaustive systemic study of the sores, since they have been related to different agents, disorders and systemic diseases such as:

  • Stress
  • Chronic trauma
  • Chronic irritations, such as certain toothpastes and mouthwashes.
  • Certain foods, such as tomatoes
  • Blood disorders such as iron deficiency and deficiency of certain vitamins.
  • Disorders and diseases of the digestive system
  • Different systemic syndromes

Although it has been related to those described, many times the origin is unknown (idiopathic), thus calling it relapsing aphthous stomatitis.

There are several measures and personalized treatments that help, to a great extent, to eliminate or reduce these outbreaks of aphthous ulcers so annoying. In Clínica Sotorra, we are specialists in Dentistry and Stomatology, in medicine and oral pathology, so the diagnosis and treatment will be the most accurate.
