Magna Clinic Marbella, pioneering center in oncological hyperthermia

The specialist in Family Medicine and Manager and Medical Director of the prestigious Magna Clinic Marbella, Dr. Angélica Urda Valcárcel explains why Magna Clinic is a center of national and international reference. With modern and complete facilities and equipped with various units to deal with almost any disease, Magna Clinic is a pioneer in Spain in oncological hyperthermia under the guidance of Dr. Jorge Contreras.

Why is Magna Clinic a center of medical excellence?

Magna Clinic is a center of medical excellence because it is a pioneering center in a complementary and innovative treatment for oncology patients, which is oncological hyperthermia and, of course, because we have professionals with a profile of excellence in their daily practice.

Likewise, treatments are completely personalized and appointments are all informative, so that if a patient wishes to have a second opinion, all he has to do is call, contact us and our fully trained nursing team will know how to direct him and guide him in what he needs.

Excellence is also based on our facilities and the quality of our medical equipment.

What units and facilities does Magna Clinic Marbella consist of?

Magna Clinic Marbella is a medical center of specialties. The clinic covers practically all medical specialties. Our most powerful units are the Oncology and Oncological Hyperthermia Unit directed by Dr. Contreras. Here we perform deep locoregional hyperthermia and body hyperthermia.

The Cardiology unit in charge of Dr. Chinchurreta, in which we have all the complete equipment, ultrasound, ergometry and all types of Holter for monitoring heart rate and blood pressure.

We also have a powerful unit of aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery by Dr. Giraldo. We would like to highlight the rehabilitation and functional recovery unit, in which we have a rheumatologist, a traumatologist, a physiotherapist and a chiropractor.

What differentiates Magna Clinic from other clinics?

Magna Clinic and the concept we have in our center of private assistance is that no center is exclusive, we are all complementary because the objective is the attention and care of the patient.

From diagnosis, treatment and aftercare to all treatment, both medical and surgical. Obviously there are magnificent centers with excellent professionals, but at Magna Clinic our seal of quality is privacy, discretion and personalized attention. We try to adapt our professionals to the availability of patients, understanding their health limitations and we provide personalized attention, with a multidisciplinary treatment. Patients are seen in clinical session and we try to give a diagnosis among all the professionals, trying that the patient has the least disturbances or complications of having to be constantly asking for appointments for other professionals. That is our difference.

Pioneers in oncologic hyperthermia

Oncological hyperthermia is a medical technique that we perform by artificially increasing the temperature at a specific point or in a specific region of the body. We do this through medical devices that perform the so-called deep locoregional hyperthermia.

This started quite a few years ago. In Spain we are pioneers in doing this and we have the equipment and machines that are registered with the Spanish Medicines Agency, have all the CE marking and all the European regulations that are currently required.

What does this heat do to the tumor cells? The heat in the tumor cells – which are cells with a little less oxygen, less nutrients, a little more rebellious, so to speak – sensitizes them to conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Of course, hyperthermia does not replace chemotherapy or radiotherapy, but rather complements them, making these cells more sensitive and more vulnerable to conventional treatments, so that patients improve their survival rate and reduce the size of the tumor. The studies that are available are encouraging.

Obviously it is a fairly young technique, it is a fairly new treatment, but the association with radiotherapy has been demonstrated, since it increases the radiosensitivity of the tumor cells by 1 to 1.5 times. And it is much more effective, since the natural mechanisms that we have in all cells to repair the DNA in order to be able to replicate, the excess heat prevents this mechanism.

We are on a path, we are endorsed by the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology under the direction of Dr. Jorge Contreras, who is our director of oncology and someone who can be considered the father of oncological hyperthermia in Spain.

Now we are fighting because the aim is to improve as much as possible the quality of life of our patients, to increase the survival rate and to be able to provide novel treatments that have scientific evidence.
