What is Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation surgery whose objective is to correct vaginal hyperlaxity, the distension of the tissues of the vaginal canal, and to recover the tone and contractile capacity of the vaginal muscles.

Over the last decade, there has been an increase in intimate surgeries worldwide, including vaginoplasty. In 2016, more than 55,000 vaginoplasties were performed worldwide and in Spain we counted around 1,000 interventions during this same year. Despite these figures, vaginoplasty is still a taboo subject.

What is vaginal hyperplasia?

Vaginal hyperlaxity is a phenomenon that frequently occurs after childbirth, especially in the case of long, complex, instrumented deliveries and/or with large newborns, weighing more than 3,000 grams.

Vaginal hyperlaxity is due to a lack of tone in the perineal muscles. Women who suffer from it present, above all, of a decrease in sensitivity during sexual intercourse and/or abundant loss of liquids after bathing.

Objectives of vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a female intimate surgery whose main objective is to reduce the vaginal canal in order to improve sexual life.

It is common to associate other vulvar rejuvenation maneuvers such as labiaplasty to remove excess skin “aged” at the level of the labia minora or augmentation of the labia majora with hyaluronic acid injections to improve the smoothness and hydration of the vulva.

Who can have a vaginoplasty?

We can distinguish as potential candidates women who:

  • Have the sensation of having a wide vaginal canal, making sexual intercourse difficult with “floating” penetration and vaginal gas.
  • Suffer from an abnormally large opening of the vaginal canal, making it difficult to perform simple daily activities (vagina that fills with water during bathing…).
  • They suffer from an abnormally distended vagina, with vaginal laxity or hyperlaxity, with an elongated or too open vulva.
  • Who have had an episiotomy.
  • Who wish to live a fuller sexuality.
  • Who fear an evolution of their case towards prolapse and/or the appearance of urinary incontinence.

Why is it performed?

This surgical procedure is performed on women who wish to correct the widening of the vaginal canal due to childbirth, age or menopause.

Vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty is an increasingly common plastic surgery, which results in a narrower vagina and stronger pelvic muscles.

What does it consist of?

The vaginoplasty procedure consists of the surgical remodeling of the fascial tissues that surround the vaginal canal with the objective of recovering both the original diameter (prior to childbirth) and the elasticity of the vagina, as well as strengthening the pelvic floor to prevent the appearance of prolapse and urinary incontinence.

The procedure is performed in the operating room, usually under epidural anesthesia (at the discretion of the anesthesiologist), lasts approximately 90 minutes and does not require hospitalization.

Postoperative period

It is not usually a particularly painful type of surgery. It is recommended to take anti-inflammatory drugs during the first 3 days after surgery.

During the first 48 hours after surgery it is normal for the patient to feel some discomfort. It is necessary to rest during this period and place cold in the affected area. The stitches are reabsorbable and will disappear after 10 days. The patient can return to work after 3 or 4 days, with minimal precautions and the surgeon will check every week that the healing is proceeding correctly.

Activities such as horseback riding or cycling are not recommended until 6 weeks after surgery.

Care after surgery

During the first 48 hours after surgery it is normal for the patient to feel some discomfort. It is necessary to rest during this period and place cold in the affected area.

Complications and risks

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks and complications associated with the intervention. In the case of vaginoplasty the risk of complications is very low, the most frequent being: hematomas, infections, imperfect scars and recurrence of vaginal laxity.

Results

It is an operation with a high degree of satisfaction, both at a functional level: sexual relations are much more pleasant for both partners, and at an aesthetic level: closure of the vaginal opening and, frequently, other rejuvenation maneuvers such as labiaplasty or labia majora augmentation are associated.
