Gynecomastia: treatment to reduce male breasts

Technically, a gynecomastia is the enlargement of one or both breasts in men. The original problem causing this condition is usually associated with hyperprolactinemia, which means that there is an excessive amount of prolactin in the blood.

Another possible cause could be hyperestrogenism, a factor that causes the liver to be unable to metabolize estrogens. There is also a cause associated with the side effects of some type of drug or medication.

An important distinction should be made between gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia, which occurs when the male has accumulated fat in the form of a breast.

Gynecomastia is a serious concern for those men who suffer from it, since they are not able to lose the female breast shape even if they diet or exercise because they are not comfortable with their appearance. For this reason, the procedure to remove fat from the breasts is highly valued by the male public.

What does gynecomastia consist of?

In a first contact, an initial consultation will be made, which will set the pace of the whole process. First, a breast exploration will be performed along with a complete medical examination in order to verify the cause of the gynecomastia.

Before starting the surgery, the professionals will provide all the necessary information to the patient, what medication can be taken, what preparation should be carried out… As such, the surgery process has a duration ranging from one and a half to two hours, and as a general rule does not require hospital admission, although in some cases a day’s stay is recommended.

Except in isolated cases, the anesthesia provided to the patient will be local.

If the cause of gynecomastia is an excess of mammary gland, this must be removed with a scalpel with an incision in the areola. The most frequent treatment is this together with liposuction, with which the excess fat is removed with a cannula.

It takes between an hour and a half and two hours for each breast operated.

Gynecomastia postoperative period

In this case, we are talking about a comfortable, fast and safe postoperative period, regardless of how the process was carried out. It is normal to feel some discomfort in the days following surgery, although these should be controlled with appropriate medication.

Once the operation has been completed, total rest should be maintained for two days after the operation. The patient may feel some discomfort in the area, and during the first 45 days should wear a surgical girdle.

Who can be a candidate for gynecomastia?

Under normal circumstances, any healthy man can undergo this surgery. However, it is always recommended to go to a specialist who will recommend which intervention is necessary in case of your state of health and body condition.

Not everyone can have a gynecomastia, for example men with obesity and / or overweight are not recommended if they have not previously made a diet. In men who have associated habits such as alcohol intake or steroids in excessive amounts are subjected to this intervention.

If the patient is a smoker, he/she should stop smoking at least two or three weeks before the operation and the same time after the operation to achieve better healing.
