Relationship between abstinence and semen quality

The relationship between abstinence and semen quality is one of the most frequently asked questions in a reproductive clinic. While it is an important thing to keep in mind when testing semen quality, it is not necessary to be so precise when we are concerned about having a good quality semen sample to achieve gestation through sexual intercourse. However, it is important to know well the relationship between abstinence and semen quality in order to be clear about these concepts.

In order to perform a semen analysis, for example, it is necessary to obtain standard conditions to perfectly compare one sample with another. For this, it is usually advisable to have a previous abstinence of between 3 and 5 days.

Abstinence for a more effective pregnancy

Simplifying things a lot, we can say that a short abstinence would decrease the concentration of spermatozoa and a long abstinence would decrease the quality. However, there is no problem with having sex two days in a row (in the past, in order to perform an artificial insemination, in each cycle two or even three inseminations were performed on consecutive days, obtaining a different sample each day, which did not usually get worse).

However, it must be borne in mind that prolonged periods of abstinence that are too short can end up “exhausting” the testicle and deteriorate the quality of the sample. However, too long an abstinence will always be worse than too short an abstinence.

Semen quality

As far as the quality of the semen sample is concerned, it is advisable to use common sense, maintaining relations according to the tastes of each partner and avoiding fixed dates. Guidelines – frequently found on the Internet – of “every three days”, “every other day”, etc. should be avoided. It is always much better, both for the quality of the sample and for the life of the couple, to have intercourse without a fixed pattern and only according to what you both feel like. However, it should not be forgotten that prolonged abstinence can be detrimental, so it is advisable to have a sufficient sexual frequency for success to be achieved.
