Virtual glasses, a new tool to combat odontophobia

Some dental clinics are introducing the use of virtual glasses in their practices to reassure patients. The lenses, which project images and emit sound, prevent the instruments and utensils in the dental office from being seen. In this way, the focus of attention is modified and the dentist can carry out his work without inconvenience.

According to a publication issued by the University of Barcelona in 2011, patients who experience virtual distraction report less pain. The glasses are an instrument that contributes to the comfort of the person and, in turn, calms the fear of the dentist and the perception of pain, since the patient has the sensation of being in a relaxed environment.

Most research confirms the link between fear of the dentist and pain sensitivity. Thus, the journal Community Dental and Oral Epidemiology published that fear is one of the main causes of suffering during the intervention and that odontophobia is what determines the patient’s quality of dental life.

All patients who incorporate the Sedentist program into their visit will be provided with virtual glasses, with the aim of alleviating their fear of the dentist.
