This is how posterior ankle impingement

Unitrauma is a center of medical excellence formed by a group of prestigious specialists in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology. Its objective is to offer the patient the best service, which is why they have the best means and the highest technology in the specialty to treat diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The center is committed to minimally invasive techniques and molecular regeneration therapies.

Origin of the injury

Posterior ankle impingement is caused by a collision of bony structures against very close tendon structures in the posterior region of the region, causing a continuous and abnormal friction that, as it progresses, increases pain and functional disability.

The posterior region of the ankle is formed by the posterior part of the tibia, talus and calcaneus, which articulate favoring foot and ankle movements. Normally, an excessive bony growth in the posterior region of the talus of medial location called os trigonum, or lateral location Stieda process, are those that exert the mechanical effect of shock triggering pain.

This injury occurs frequently in athletes who use plantar flexion activity, such as dancers, soccer players, etc.

How is the injury diagnosed?

For the diagnosis of this pathology it is essential to analyze the mechanism of the injury, how did it occur, when does it hurt, and the clinical examination of the patient.

For the confirmation of the suspicion of the injury we have different techniques: Rx, Ultrasound, CT and MRI.

Treatment of posterior ankle impingement

The first step of the treatment is to temporarily abandon the sport activity and the use of oral anti-inflammatory drugs together with physiotherapeutic treatment. When these resources fail, it is decided to resort to surgery, which we perform arthroscopically, which consists of locating and removing the bone fragment and cleaning the inflammatory tissue responsible for the pain.

During the postoperative period, rehabilitation is recommended for the progressive reincorporation to the previous sports activity, achieving very favorable results.
