All about zygomatic implants

What are zygomatic implants?

Zygomatic implants are longer than conventional implants because they are anchored to the bone in the cheekbone area (or zygomatic bone). This bone is much harder and more resistant than the maxillary bone. This type of implant measures between 30 and 52.5 mm.

Who are zygomatic implants for?

Zygomatic implants are aimed at those patients who have lost a lot of bone in the upper jaw after losing some or all of their teeth, provided that the bone cannot be regenerated with other techniques.

What does zygomatic implant surgery consist of?

First of all, a good diagnosis and treatment plan must be made. For this purpose, our dentists meet every morning in a “Clinical Session” to analyze the patient’s case, obtain a diagnosis and agree on the most appropriate treatment plan by means of photographs and X-rays of the patient’s mouth.

At Abaden, we have the most advanced technology. With our digital planning software, we can perform computer-guided, pre-planned surgery.

Before the day of the intervention, some records of the patient’s mouth are taken to make a fixed dental prosthesis that will be placed on the same day of surgery, so you can smile and eat from the first day. The entire surgery is performed comfortably under general anesthesia, so the patient will be asleep and will not feel any pain.

On the day of surgery, once the patient is anesthetized, one, two or four zygomatic implants will be placed in the patient’s mouth depending on the treatment plan indicated for the patient’s situation. The main zygomatic implant treatment is the Quad treatment, which consists of placing two zygomatic implants on the right side of the patient’s face and two on the left side.

The provisional prosthesis will be placed on these implants on the same day of the intervention. Once the bone and gum tissues have healed, the prosthesis will be replaced by a fixed prosthesis.

The second treatment usually performed with zygomatic implants is the hybrid treatment, which combines this type of implants with conventional implants, which are placed in the maxillary bone. A zygomatic implant is usually placed on the right side of the patient’s face, another on the left and two or four conventional implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to recover from zygomatic implants?

This type of surgery is performed under general anesthesia. For this reason, the patient will have to stay in the hospital for a few hours after the surgery. Once discharged from the hospital, the patient must take the medication indicated by the doctor and follow his recommendations to avoid possible infections and relieve pain. In a few days the discomfort will disappear. However, it is very important that the patient has regular check-ups with the doctor to ensure the durability of the treatment.

What are the advantages of zygomatic implants over other techniques?

This type of implants are an option for those patients who do not have enough jawbone and want to enjoy the advantages offered by a fixed prosthesis. However, there are alternatives such as bone grafting and sinus elevation, which allow the placement of conventional implants.
