Immediate implants: what and who they are for

More than one intervention and numerous visits to the dentist are for the placement of an immediate implant. People see it as a great advantage to be able to save more than one intervention. A few years ago, it was necessary to wait a few months to place a new dental implant after extraction. Another advantage of this application is to be able to have fixed teeth the same day and all this under the latest techniques in sedation with which the patient will not notice or feel anything.

Dr. Joan Bladé Marsal, Medical Director of Grupdrblade and specialist in dentistry and stomatology, explains more about immediate implants and their treatment.

What exactly are immediate implants, and why are they so called?

They are implants that are placed immediately after the extraction of the dental pieces that are not in good condition and then, with an intra-oral scanner, the teeth that will later be placed in the patient are made.

How are they different from conventional implants?

They have specific characteristics since they are more conical and retentive than the usual ones. In addition, the dental prosthesis that the patient will wear on the day of the intervention must have contacts with the opposing teeth that do not damage the implants.

Can all patients have recourse to this type of implants, or can there be contraindications? Which ones?

The contraindications are:

  • Infection(s) around the root(s) of the tooth to be extracted.
  • A very porous bone quality or the amount of bone is not enough, after a 3D study.
  • Patients taking bisphosphonates.

How will the process of placing the implants be?

  • An exploration and study of the occlusion and 3D radiological study is performed.
  • Impression with intra-oral scanner to perform guided surgery.
  • Under sedation, the extractions, implants and impressions are made to place the dental prosthesis so that the same day the patient already has fixed teeth and does not go at any time with any removable or removable prosthesis.

When will the patient be able to “eat” normally?

The following day. It will be a soft food and cold temperature.
