Why is psycho-pedagogical evaluation in children important?

The psycho-pedagogical evaluation consists of a set of interviews and diagnostic tests to assess the psychological, academic and emotional situation of the person.

Why perform a psycho-pedagogical evaluation?

Our children and adolescents spend a lot of time at school. For this reason, we must be attentive to low grades or failures, accumulation of homework, repeated notes in the agenda, low motivation to go to school or to face exams or exercises … as they may indicate that there are learning problems or learning difficulties.

If a child is diagnosed in time (disability, behavioral disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, autism, high abilities…) we are helping him/her in his/her learning process. In this way, he/she will see that thanks to knowing what is happening, he/she will be able to catch up with the class with the appropriate measures, thus benefiting his/her self-esteem and self-confidence. The ideal is to perform the psycho-pedagogical evaluation as early as possible, since sometimes we get very unmotivated and frustrated adolescents, bordering on school failure.

When the problems are emotional and a child is observed hanging around the playground, or never participates in class, shy, it should be taken into account, since he may not be able to ask for help on his own and that underneath there are processes of anxiety, fear, sadness that he is not knowing how to solve. If an evaluation and psychological tests are done in time, the impact on his personality will be less and, therefore, his recovery will be sooner.

What does the evaluation consist of?

The evaluation process performed by the child psychologist consists of passing a battery of tests, whose scores, with a reliability of results of 95%, will determine in which centile or with what probability there is a difficulty with respect to what is expected by their age reference group (children, adolescents and adults).

There are also specific tests for a psychological evaluation in adults, which measure the different personality factors and symptoms such as anxiety, ruminations, obsessions, intrusive thoughts, insomnia…

And then?

After obtaining the results, the specialist in Psychology will make an adjusted treatment plan to alleviate symptomatology and recover affected processes.
