Multiple Intelligences

The award-winning movie Inside Out, ‘Inside Out’ in its Spanish version has helped many people to know what we mean when we talk about Emotional Intelligence, although Multiple Intelligences are still a real unknown by most people, and detect these talents is essential, because only then they will develop properly. At the same time, it will also provide us with information on how to acquire knowledge.

What are Multiple Intelligences?

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences was developed by Howard Gardner, who in 2011 was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. This theory puts an end to the traditional concept that intelligence is something innate. Thus, intelligence is defined as an ability, competence or capacity that can be acquired through the development of the multiple intelligences that are recognized among children.

However, these great talents possessed by children are suppressed or blurred with the passage of time due to the current educational system.

The term intelligence originates from the roots ‘intus’ and ‘legere’. That is, between and to choose; so it refers to the person’s ability to choose the best option among those existing at a particular time, a fact that will give the person greater benefit.

Over time many authors have given their version of the concept, although today it can be said that intelligence is the ability to solve problems and create products that are valued in a specific and determined cultural context. The different intelligences, as indicated by Gardner, are located in different brain regions and work in combination:

  • Linguistic: ability to manage, structure and give meaning to the functions of language.
  • Logical-mathematical: consists of calculating, quantifying and testing the validity of different hypotheses through different complex operations.
  • Musical: perceiving, transforming, and expressing music.
  • Corporal-kinesthetic: the use of the body when creating or expressing emotions.
  • Interpersonal: understanding other people, acting and responding correctly to a person’s mood, desire or temperament.
  • Intrapersonal: is based on attending and perceiving one’s own feelings in order to understand and change the mood at will.
  • Naturist: sensitivity to the animal world and nature.
  • Visuospatial: ability to perceive space.
