Things you need to know about liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of fat using a cannula. It is the result of the connection of the cannula to a negative pressure, that is, to a suction force so that the fat is extracted.

The cannula is a cylinder at the distal end of which there are holes through which the fat is extracted. These holes can be positioned in different ways and can be of different thicknesses. Thus, depending on the area to be liposuctioned, different types of cannulas can be used, with different diameters, arrangement of holes in different ways, etc.

Liposuction is performed through an incision of 3 mm. through which we introduce the cannula, which will be breaking and extracting the fat in each of the movements that are made with it. It is very important to perform these steps in a well-organized manner and in the correct plane, so that the fat extracted is uniform, avoiding very thick cannulas and high suction pressures.

According to Plastic Surgery specialists, not everyone can undergo liposuction, only those who have a quality skin, that is to say, that has turgidity and capacity of retraction. This aspect is a priority so that when the fat is extracted, the skin that covered it has the capacity to retract and give the shape that we have provided through liposuction.

Types of liposuction

There are two types of liposuction, each with its advantages and disadvantages:

  • Assisted liposuction. This is the one in which in addition to negative pressure, other forces such as vibration, ultrasound or laser are used. Ultrasound and laser would theoretically provide a greater capacity for skin retraction, but we now know that what happens is that they generate a discrete inflammation in the skin for about 2 years giving that feeling, although later it will be eliminated with the consequent greater risk of depressions and / or irregularities.
  • Non-assisted liposuction. It is the one in which only we use a negative pressure. It is the one used by the most internationally renowned surgeons for being the one that most allows adjusting the result and having a lower rate of complications.

Results of liposuction

Liposuction is performed in certain areas that later will have much less appetite for fat because the number of fat cells and adipocytes that will remain in them will be much lower.

The results of liposuction are permanent as long as the patient does not put on weight.

Risks of liposuction

Liposuction has very few risks, however, if it is not performed properly it can generate problems derived from irregularities caused by using very thick cannulas, aspirating at very high pressures or performing too many repeated passes in the same area.

However, the most serious complication is systemic shock due to vascular failure in those liposuctions of more than 5 liters that have been performed without adequate anesthetic, hospital and fluid therapy support.

Therefore, liposuction should always be performed in a hospital, with appropriate fluid and anesthesia management by an anesthesiologist and avoiding liposuction of more than 5 liters.
