Everything you need to know about embryo adoption

Embryo adoption, also known as embryo adoption, is a technique used in fertility treatments with high fertility rates.

It consists of transferring an embryo, previously donated by a family that has undergone fertility treatment, to the patient who needs it.

It is a very effective technique, since in many cases, patients have more embryos generated than the number of offspring they wish to have. In addition, the technology used allows us to transfer a single quality embryo.

As a consequence, a surplus of high quality embryos appears, which must be frozen. But in any case, the patient must choose whether to vitrify or donate these embryos to other families.

Is ovarian stimulation necessary?

It is a simple and effective technique, so the patient does not need ovarian stimulation. Therefore, no hormones should be consumed. Although there are no hormones in this treatment, the patient needs to prepare the endometrium with oral and vaginal medication.

Advantages of embryo adoption

There are many advantages to choose an embryo adoption treatment:

  • Short process: the process time is reduced, because the embryos are already cryopreserved waiting to be transferred.
  • Increased success rates: the pregnancy rate reaches 45% and the implantation rate 36%.
  • Simpler preparation: endometrial preparation is very simple, since it consists of taking oral and vaginal progesterone pills.
  • Limited visits to the center: with cryopreserved embryos, an ultrasound scan is sufficient to decide the ideal moment to transfer the embryo, thus reducing the number of visits to the center.
  • Cost reduction: the laboratory work is limited to thawing, observation and transfer, so the economic cost of the treatment is lower.

Steps to follow to adopt embryos

In the IVF-Spain Madrid clinics it is a very effective treatment with high success rates. It is a quick and simple process that consists of the following steps:

  • Medical visit: to consult with a specialist.
  • Endometrial preparation: during 10-12 days, the patient must prepare her endometrium with estrogens and progesterone to achieve an adequate endometrial thickness to help achieve implantation.
  • Embryo selection: to choose the most suitable embryos for each patient, they are selected according to phenotype, blood group and Rh.
  • Embryo transfer: on the day of the embryo transfer, devitrification is performed and it is decided how many embryos will be transferred.
  • Pregnancy test: 10 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is performed to see if pregnancy has occurred.
  • First ultrasound: if the test confirms the pregnancy, at two weeks, it is the ideal time to perform an ultrasound to check that the pregnancy is developing as expected.
