Hyaluronic Acid: the enemy of wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid injectable fillers are one of the most popular facial rejuvenation techniques. As we age, the underlying tissues and firmness of our skin begin to break down due to gravity, sun, diet, genetic factors and facial muscle movements. As a result, wrinkles form and appear deep within the dermal layer of the skin. Within the dermis tissue is a network of collagen and elastin fibers that provide the skin with structure, support and elasticity. In addition, there are also fat cells and other molecules, such as hyaluronic acid, that can create volume beneath the facial skin. Over time, this network breaks down and the fat molecules lose volume. This is when wrinkles appear.

How does Hyaluronic Acid work?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glucose molecule that forms large matrices in the body’s connective tissue, such as skin and cartilage. Its function is to bind and absorb water molecules to create volume in the face. Fillers are used to fill wrinkles and/or facial folds and improve the appearance of the lips. One of the advantages of this treatment is that they are biocompatible, i.e. no allergy skin test is required prior to treatment.

How is it applied?

The hyaluronic acid injection procedure lasts between 15 and 45 minutes. The first step is to prepare the skin by cleansing the area and then applying topical or local anesthesia to numb the area during the process.

The procedure is performed with a fine needle or cannula in the dermis along the edge of the treatment area. This gives the skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.

What about recovery?

Recovery is immediate. Some redness, stinging sensation or slight swelling may be noticeable. However, these symptoms disappear in a maximum of 3 days and patients can resume their normal activities immediately. Results can be seen immediately and peak within three weeks. As time goes by, between 6 and 12 months, the body will metabolize and absorb the hyaluronic acid.
