Breast augmentation: how to choose the prosthesis?

When it comes to breast augmentation, one of the main doubts that arise is what type of prosthesis to choose, which one will be the most suitable.

Round or anatomical prostheses

The implants can be round, with different projections and widths, or anatomical with three dimensions to assess height, width and projection.

The size and shape depend on the patient’s measurements, the possibilities of her tissues and her expectations. Each case must be considered individually, according to the surgeon’s experience in correcting certain asymmetries or deformities and according to the patient’s wishes and what is to be achieved with breast augmentation.

Silicone gel prosthesis

Breast prostheses can be made of silicone gel, serum or polyurethane. The serum prosthesis consists of a silicone envelope that is filled with physiological serum to the desired size during the intervention.

In Europe and particularly in Spain, the most commonly used prostheses are made of silicone gel, which in turn can be smooth or textured.

Do they have to be changed every 10-15 years?

It is necessary to change them if after routine controls of the breasts, such as ultrasound or mammography, problems in the capsule of the implant or inside it are appreciated. For this, the Gold Standard procedure is to perform a magnetic resonance to quantify and assess the damage to the breast prosthesis and thus assess the need for prosthesis replacement. Breast implants are definitely not for life but they can last between 15 and 20 years, even more. The prostheses do not require any specific care but they are inside your body and you should take care of them as you do with your body. Wearing a bra is always part of taking care of your breasts to avoid sagging problems over the years.
