First visit to the gynecologist, when?

When to take your teenage daughter to the gynecologist for the first time is a question many mothers often ask themselves. Dr. Calvo, an expert in Gynecology and Obstetrics, recommends doing so before she starts having sexual relations, so she will know how to protect herself against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

It is easy to think that gynecological pathologies are typical of older women, and that is not so because they occur at all ages; in addition, at puberty we can find problems of menstrual disorders, vulvovaginal infections, labial coalescence, precocious puberty, breast pathology or hirsutism.

How to approach gynecology at puberty

Adolescence is a stage full of changes and needs specialized and special attention. The consultation should be private and confidential, with a relaxed atmosphere and respecting the patient’s privacy. It is important to have a specialized unit that works in a multidisciplinary way with other specialists because sometimes a gynecological problem can be secondary to a psychosocial one.

The gynecological examination at this age has the objective of confirming that the genital apparatus is normal and to receive correct contraceptive advice if necessary, not only to avoid unwanted pregnancies but also to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Aware of this need, at EGOM we have created a specialized and multidisciplinary unit, with a relaxed and trusting atmosphere so that our little “big” patients feel comfortable, can solve their problems… and their mothers are reassured.
