Learn about dental implants

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a prosthesis that is fixed in the jawbone, and has the shape, color and functions exactly like a natural tooth. It consists of two parts: one would be the titanium root and the other the ceramic crown.

For which cases are they indicated?

Nowadays, dental implants are indicated for any patient. The only thing we need is a minimum of bone support tissue to be able to place the implant and, at the same time, that the patient’s general health allows the surgery to be performed.

What does the surgery to implant them consist of?

Currently, with advances in radiology, implant placement surgery is minimally invasive. It consists of lifting a small portion of the gum and placing the implant inside the bone. On some occasions, we can perform an immediate prosthesis on the implants placed, and on others we will have to wait 8 to 12 weeks to place the tooth on the implant.

What is the post-operative period like?

The post-operative period involves a minimum of discomfort if the patient takes the pre-operative and post-operative medication correctly. Moreover, after the operation, the same day the implants are placed, the patient can continue with his/her daily routine.

What are the advantages of implants?

The great advantage of implants is their short and long term success. The fact of being able to put fixed teeth back in patients who have lost their natural teeth is what has changed our treatments in recent years.
