Bone reconstruction and implant placement in the posterior mandible

Molars are very important during the chewing process. The absence of these teeth can cause long-term complications and can even lead to additional loss of adjacent teeth. On the other hand, it also causes esthetic defects affecting the mouth and face and chronic pain in the jaw joints may occur.

When the patient lacks the posterior teeth, bone reconstruction can be performed followed by placement of dental implants in the back of the jaw.

How is the diagnosis made?

As a consequence of the lack of teeth in the posterior parts of the jaw, a profound loss of bone mass, both in width and height, can develop. To diagnose this loss of bone mass, two types of tests can be performed:

  • Scan to appreciate the deterioration of bone in the jaw.
  • Screening for missing molars

What treatment should be followed?

Before proceeding with the placement of dental implants to replace the missing teeth, it is necessary to reconstruct the bone area. This can be done by integrating regenerative biomaterials or by grafting the patient’s own bone.

Once the reconstruction has been carried out, the implants are placed in the back of the jaw with their respective intermediate abutments.

What are the results of the reconstruction and implant placement?

After performing the necessary diagnostic tests and performing the bone reconstruction and implant placement, the patient can recover the functionality he/she had before in that area of the mouth.
