How can I relieve my baby’s teething

You have probably heard on more than one occasion about the discomfort caused by the appearance of the first teeth in babies. It is a problem that both parents and babies themselves suffer from. At Asistencia Integral de Pediatría we give you advice on how to alleviate the symptoms of teething in your baby.

When does teething occur?

In babies, the first tooth usually appears between six and twelve months, although teething as such may begin at three months of age. Thus, both teething and the appearance of the first tooth vary from baby to baby, so you should not be concerned about whether your baby’s first tooth appears earlier or later, as there is no set milestone for that first tooth.

What you should be concerned about is the state of health of your child’s teeth, since it is thanks to them that he/she will be able to chew, speak and smile.

The aspects that will be assessed in this article are general aspects and that will not always happen, since there are cases of children in which the teeth are born without discomfort.

Signs of teething in babies

  • Crying and discomfort: many parents notice that their babies are more agitated and restless than usual when teething begins. The appearance of a tooth can be painful, and since babies are not able to talk, their reaction may be more irritability than usual.
  • Biting: Biting is one of the main signs of teething. Your baby may start biting everything in front of him, and this is a reaction to relieve the pain they feel. A useful aid can be teething toys, as they will have something to chew on without risk or danger. However, biting is not only a sign of teething.
  • Loss of appetite: the baby not wanting to eat is another symptom of teething. In fact, it is common for them to refuse the solid foods they once enjoyed because they have swollen gums.
  • Drooling: drooling is also a common action at this stage, as saliva cools their gums, comforting them. On the other hand, drooling does not necessarily imply teething, as drooling can occur for many other reasons.

How can I soothe my teething baby?

  • Cloths and toys: a chew toy or a damp cloth that has spent a couple of minutes in the freezer can make your baby feel more comfortable.
  • Fingers: you can rub your fingers on the baby’s gums, which may relieve pain.
  • Routine: Sleeping problems are common during teething. If you try to keep the same schedules and routines with your baby, he/she may feel more comfortable.

Teething is not fun, but it is not the end of the world. These are just a few tips to help you get through this stage, and you can help your baby feel better until he or she is fully teething.
