The Power of the Smile

According to the results of different studies, words only transmit 7% of the message, so the remaining 93% is transmitted through non-verbal communication. In this sense, a smile is worth a thousand words.

Normally, a smile conveys positive information to other people. It informs that the person

  • Feels good
  • Is at ease with him/herself
  • Is cheerful
  • Is in harmony, transmitting good vibrations to other people.

The smile causes an increase in mood, soothing pain and reinforcing sociability so that we feel better physically and emotionally. This is due to its effect of releasing endorphins, hormones related to pleasure and personal well-being.

Smiling, when given at the right moments, is good in all areas of our life, because it helps us to establish bonds with other people.

In the field of psychology, smiling is associated with states of joy, well-being, tranquility, peace and balance. However, it can also be related to reactions that people have to situations in which they do not feel comfortable: situations of insecurity, confusion, nervousness and discomfort. They are very different smiles, because the first ones are full of joy and control and, on the other hand, the second ones transmit doubt and nervousness. Even so, both release endorphins and help the person to balance.

For all these reasons, smiling has the following benefits:

  • It releases endorphins
  • It attracts others, since it produces a contagious effect.
  • It gives us security
  • Oxygenates our lungs
  • It regulates the pulse
  • Delays physical aging
  • Controls high levels of adrenaline generated by stress.
