What is Lingual Orthodontics

Lingual orthodontics is an esthetic method of correcting the dentition. It is mainly used by people who do not like to follow an unsightly treatment.

What is lingual orthodontics?

Lingual orthodontics is a very new system by which the teeth can be moved so that the appliance is not visible from the outside, since the brackets and archwires are placed inside the teeth, unlike conventional orthodontics, in which they are placed on the outside.

Lingual orthodontics has added advantages in addition to correcting the dentition: it makes dental hygiene easier and does not damage the front enamel of the teeth due to the self-cleaning action of the tongue; also, as more saliva is concentrated in this area, bacterial activity increases.

Types of lingual orthodontics

Today there are two techniques of lingual orthodontics:

  • The most economical method, using archwires and brackets with standard measurements.
  • Custom orthodontics with maximum precision and comfort for the patient. For this, the treatment is defined and a 3D model is made with the final position that the teeth should have and at the same time with the most aesthetic result possible.

What do I have to do after lingual orthodontics?

When the treatment time for lingual orthodontics is over, the archwires and brackets are removed and fixed or removable devices are placed, depending on the case, to prevent the teeth from returning to their initial position.

Other orthodontic systems

  • Conventional orthodontics: this is the most popular system, which consists of placing metal or transparent brackets on the outer area of the dentition and attaching them by means of elastics to the archwire to give it the best possible shape.
  • Invisible orthodontics: invisible and removable aligners that put pressure on the teeth are placed. They are splints that are made to fit the patient’s mouth and must be changed approximately every two weeks, and the patient must remove them when eating. A remarkable advantage of this system is that, being removable, they allow a better oral hygiene, which reduces the appearance of caries.
