The new normal in aesthetic medicine clinics

Little by little, we are getting back to normal after the coronavirus health crisis. Aesthetic medicine clinics all over the country are also returning to normality according to the de-escalation phase they are in. However, the fear of further outbreaks will remain in the air until a cure is found.

With this fear, safety and protection measures are multiplying at both the personal and professional levels. In this sense, we, the aesthetic medicine professionals, are attentive to all the news that will have to be followed for the reopening of our aesthetic medicine clinics.

What will the reopening protocol be like after the crisis?

The de-escalation plan will be different in each of the provinces, depending on the level of improvement in the number of infections and deaths due to COVID-19. Each phase involves a new lifting of restrictions and, faced with this, we professionals in the healthcare sector must be prepared.

The Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME) has prepared an action protocol for the reopening of aesthetic medicine clinics in Madrid and all Spanish provinces. Hygiene and personal protection measures for workers, disinfection of the facilities, triage of patients according to the seriousness of the consultation or the taking of safety measures or distancing are just some of the measures to be taken into account.

In short, these would be the most important ones:

  • Preparation of personnel. The entire team of workers must know and follow hygiene, disinfection and cleaning recommendations. At the same time, you have to make them known to patients both by telephone – when making the (necessary) appointment – and during their stay in the clinic.
  • Provision of protective equipment and mandatory use throughout the day. Workers must use special suits, masks, screens and gloves to attend to patients. Likewise, surgical masks, shoe protectors, hydroalcoholic gel, etc., should be required or provided to users.
  • Frequent cleaning and disinfection. When opening and closing the clinic, before and after receiving each patient, at the beginning and end of each worker’s shift… To the exhaustive sanitization already followed by the aesthetic medicine clinics in Madrid, we must add the current protection and ventilation measures required by the coronavirus.
  • Checking the patient’s symptoms before entering the clinic. Through telephone triage, the responsible person should ensure that the client has had no symptoms of coronavirus in the two weeks prior to his or her visit. Before accessing the clinic, the client’s temperature should be rechecked and taken.
  • Information and consent. The patient should be aware of the care to be assumed in any aesthetic medicine treatment in these post-coronavirus de-escalation phases and should acknowledge this by means of a consent document.
