Breast prosthesis, how to choose it to achieve a natural result?

Nowadays it is very common to find women who have resorted to expert hands for breast augmentation, but this aesthetic process is more complex than it may seem at first glance. To obtain a natural and satisfactory result, each case must be treated individually, since the physical characteristics, as well as the patient’s preferences, influence the materials and processes that will be chosen to carry out the intervention.

Plastic surgeon Agustín Granado Tiagonce, with more than 20 years of experience in the field, points out that there are several types of breast prostheses that differ in composition and shape. “The choice of one type or another will depend mainly on the clinical case,” says the doctor.

Cohesive silicone gel implants

It is important that the implants are of the highest quality to prevent their contents from coming out of the implant structure in the event of rupture, something that could cause discomfort to the patient. It is necessary to bear in mind that “the quality of the prostheses does not depend on the shape, but on the composition”, according to Dr. Granado.

In his interventions, Dr. Granado only uses cohesive silicone gel prostheses, which are firmer and safer. “Even if the prosthesis were to break, the cohesive silicone gel would not leak and would remain within the structure of the implant,” he explains. If a rupture occurs, the shape of the breasts could change and the prosthesis would have to be replaced, but “without urgency”. These implants also have a lifetime guarantee, so in principle it should not be necessary to change them. In any case, the doctor recommends patients to check their breasts once a year to make a correct follow-up of the prosthesis.

Round or teardrop-shaped prostheses

There are round prostheses, which are a half sphere, and anatomical prostheses, which are shaped like a drop of water. The difference, once installed in the patient’s body, lies in the upper aspect of the breast, since the transition from the clavicle to the breast will be more forced with the round prostheses than with the anatomical ones.

As far as the shape is concerned, the patient can choose whether she wants a more noticeable or less noticeable augmentation, and depending on her physical constitution, the doctor chooses one implant design or another to suit her body. To do so, he takes pictures of the patient’s torso which he then uses to simulate in 3D what the breast implants would look like.

It should be emphasized that in any aesthetic operation it is important that the result is natural, but it should not be forgotten that after all it is a surgical intervention.
