Genital warts or condylomata acuminata

There is a type of skin warts that have an infectious origin. They are usually caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

These warts can appear on different areas of the body. The most frequent locations are the hands, soles of the feet, face and genitals. In this last location the most common route of transmission is sexual contact.

Treatment of genital warts

There are different alternatives for treatment including cryotherapy or freezing with liquid nitrogen, laser or removal with superficial surgery or curettage.

Genital warts in men

In the case of men, genital warts are usually easily detectable with the naked eye. It is therefore highly recommended to visit a dermatologist at the slightest suspicion and when the warts are small and few in number. In this case, treatment is usually simple and quick.

Genital warts in women

In women, genital warts can go unnoticed and even affect more internal parts of the genitals such as the cervix. Early diagnosis and treatment are also very important to prevent growth and spread. In addition, in women, the involvement of the cervix predisposes to a greater extent to the development of cancer in this location. This is the reason for the periodic gynecological examinations recommended for all women.

Another location close to the genital region is the perianal region, which affects both sexes relatively frequently and should be evaluated in any genital wart infection. In this area early diagnosis and treatment is also very important due to the possible internal extension into the rectal canal.
