What you need to know about breast reduction

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of the breasts. In this intervention the size of the breasts is reduced by removing excess breast tissue, fat and skin, while repositioning the areola and nipple. If desired, the areola can also be reduced in size.

There are different reasons why patients resort to a mammoplasty; among them, the aesthetic, but may also be motivated by health problems arising from excess breasts, such as back or neck pain, discomfort when performing any physical activity or irritation of the skin under the breast.

Breast reduction should wait until the breast is fully developed, although it may be performed earlier if the physical problems are severe. On the other hand, this procedure is not recommended for women who intend to breastfeed after pregnancy. It is advisable to have a mammogram before and after surgery to rule out breast pathologies.

The choice of the incision to be made will depend on the anatomy of the breast. In any case, it will always be designed so that the resulting scar is as inconspicuous as possible.

Breast reduction surgery

The procedure usually lasts between two and three hours and can be performed on an outpatient basis, being discharged the same day of the intervention. Sometimes it is usually necessary to be admitted to the hospital for a day, being discharged the day after the intervention.

It is important that the surgeon knows the patient’s postoperative activities, so that he/she can give precise postoperative indications.
