CAD-CAM, technique for designing smiles

CAD-CAM allows the design and fabrication of dental prostheses by computer. This technology greatly reduces the margin of human error to achieve high success rates.

CAD (Computer Aided Design) -CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) makes it possible to design and manufacture extremely precise and high quality dental restorations. Dentistry is constantly evolving and this technological system means a great progress in the field of dental prosthesis. With this digital technology, porcelain veneers, dental prostheses, implant prostheses, among other restorative treatments, are manufactured.

This assisted fabrication with a three-dimensional digital reproduction of the base mouth allows for greater precision in treatments, shorter times, a very low margin of error and high percentages of success. This technique achieves a better fit of prosthetic restorations.

Dental CAD-CAM, the procedure

CAD-CAM technology consists of 3 processes.

1- Scanning of the tooth or dental implant on the model.

2- Computer design of the prosthesis using 3D software.

3- Robotized milling or fabrication of the pieces from the design information. This process is carried out in just a few minutes.

The advantages of this technique are mainly

  • High dental esthetics
  • Precision in the adaptation of the prosthesis, with an exact marginal seal.
  • Speed in the fabrication, which simplifies the laboratory steps.
  • Reduction in the number of visits.
  • Better case planning

It is a technique that facilitates and optimizes the process of making the prosthesis, as well as the rehabilitation treatment of the patient.
