Penile Enlargement: Techniques and Risks

There are 2 procedures to enlarge the penis: enlargement and thickening. For both, there are several techniques.

For enlargement, the most commonly used technique is the section of the suspensory ligament of the penis with cutaneous advancement plasty, although there are others less known for their complexity based on the enlargement of the corpora cavernosa of the penis. On the other hand, for thickening there are several techniques depending on whether the result is permanent (placement of collagen matrices covering the penis) or temporary (with injected hyaluronic acid or by means of fat, either ultrafiltrated or autografted).

In which cases are they indicated?

They are indicated for those patients who have a micropenis, or for those patients who wish to improve their personal and/or sexual self-confidence, as long as there is no underlying psychological problem that needs to be addressed beforehand.

Benefits of this treatment

The benefits are based on improved self-esteem and self-confidence. In the case of thickening also leads to an improvement in sexual relations by increasing genital stimulation of the couple which implies greater sexual pleasure.

Risks of the procedure

It depends on the procedure. Generally speaking, they are few and in a small percentage of patients. In the case of hyaluronic acid they are minimal. In the other cases, there are risks common to any surgery, such as wound infection, seromas, risks inherent to the techniques.

For example, in lengthening with ligament section there may be a posterior scar retraction, so a good surgical technique is very important, as well as following an exercise program after surgery.

In the case of thickening with collagen matrix, the most frequent complications are associated with problems of poor vascularization of the tissues in specific patients, infection of the matrix involving early resorption of the same, so it could not adequately stimulate the formation of tissue itself. And in very few cases, a certain degree of fibrosis.

How are the results?

It is essential to be clear about the real results that can be achieved, without creating false expectations. The percentage of satisfaction in my patients is high. The most evident results are in penile thickening; in the case of thickening with collagen matrix, an increase of approximately 1.5 cm of circumference is achieved in most cases with a natural appearance in touch and shape. In the case of thickening with hyaluronic acid, an increase of 1.5 to 2.5 cm in circumference can be achieved depending on the volume injected.

Care to be followed by the patient after the intervention

In general, no specific care is required: wound dressings, sexual rest for several weeks, antibiotic therapy and stretching exercises in the case of lengthening.
