Coronavirus and sex: is it possible to have sex?

In the last few days I have received many questions about the possibility of having sex during the coronavirus pandemic. Here I will try to summarize what we currently know and clarify some doubts, although there are still many questions to be answered.

Measures to be taken into account during sexual intercourse

  • Avoid kissing during sex
  • The virus can be transmitted through feces, so it is recommended to avoid oral-anal sexual practice.
  • There is no evidence that the virus is in vaginal fluids or semen.
  • Avoid sexual contact with people who are not in daily contact with each other.
  • If you have sex with your partner, try positions in which one person has his or her back to the other.
  • Online sex, video chatting, masturbation or sexting are good options.
  • Hand washing before and after intercourse is essential.
  • Avoid sex if your partner is unwell.
  • If your partner has any significant illness that may be worsened by COVID-19 infection, avoid sex.

Can COVID-19 be transmitted during sex?

The coronavirus is passed from person to person by droplets that an infected person inadvertently expels when talking in close proximity, coughing or sneezing. During sex, kissing is a very common practice, so the virus can be transmitted very easily. Kissing is therefore the most risky element during sexual intercourse.

In turn, touching surfaces contaminated by coronavirus is a secondary way of becoming infected, so hand washing before and after any sexual intercourse is very important.

At this time, there is no evidence that coronavirus is transmitted anally or vaginally. In fact, it is not known whether the coronavirus is present in semen or vaginal secretions.

So, can you have sex during the coronavirus pandemic?

If you or your partner has the coronavirus, the best advice I can give you is to isolate yourself and take extreme hygiene measures, not sharing a bathroom or common objects, washing your hands continuously, and avoiding sexual intercourse.

In asymptomatic people, with no history of exposure and who have been isolated for several days, and even those who have tested negative, sex with precautions can be a simple way to have fun and relieve anxiety in this potentially stressful time.

What do we do with new partners?

Currently, it is recommended to interact with people only for essential things. If we have recently met a new partner, it is recommended to maintain the precautions mentioned above, so we recommend waiting for this quarantine period to pass before having physical contact again.

As sexual relations will decrease in the coming weeks, there are other ways to express eroticism: sexting, erotic reading, video calls or masturbation can be alternatives to sexual relations.

Coronavirus quarantine, much less sex

In some cases there has been talk of a possible baby boom thanks to the quarantine caused by the coronavirus. However, specialists are not so sure, since the constant presence of children at home as well as the distance between people makes it difficult to have sex.
